5. Bugsy
While much of this story about mobster Bugsy Siegel’s dream to build the fabulous Flamingo in the middle of the Mojave Desert has been romanticized, it’s still an interesting peek back into the history of the early mobster roots in Las Vegas. If only Bugsy could see what the Las Vegas strip looks like today.
4. Vegas Vacation
Ok, this one isn’t exactly high cinema, but it’s a fun flick for Vegas geeks who love to see every angle of their favorite city on film. This one has it all; Siegfried & Roy, a trip to Hoover Dam, going back to the ATM a few too many times and Wayne Newton. It’s too bad that “alternative” casino doesn’t actually exist though. I’d love to play some Rock, Paper, Scissors in Vegas.
3. The Hangover
The original Hangover flick came out of nowhere in 2009 to become a surprise pop-culture sensation. After the 2008 economic disaster that sent the city into the doldrums, this movie put Las Vegas back on the public’s radar in a big way. Caesars Palace employees still say they get asked if this is “the real Caesars Palace” and there’s always a few Zach Galifianakis impersonators busking on the Strip or Fremont street.
2. Ocean’s Eleven
This heist film about a slick team of charming criminals pulling off an elaborate scheme to rob the Bellagio has become a modern day caper classic. Extremely quotable and re-watchable, this 2001 remake of the 1960 Rat Pack classic manages to outshine the original.
1. Casino
Based on the true story of how mobsters Frank Rosenthal & Anthony “The Ant” Spilotro came to control the Stardust in the 1970’s, and how the mob’s rule over the town eventually all came crashing down. Casino is a masterpiece and must-see Vegas viewing.
