Top 10 Las Vegas movies

From spy thrillers, mob movies, comedies, and heist films, Vegas has served as the backdrop of many Hollywood blockbusters.

10. Swingers

swingers-vegas
“Vegas, baby, Vegas!” So many of us have uttered that iconic phrase from this 1996 Vince Vaughn & John Favreau comedy as we get excitedly ready to hop a Southwest Airlines flight bound for Las Vegas.  While most of this film about a group of young struggling actors is set in Los Angeles, the centerpiece of the film involves buddies Mike & Trent heading out on an impromptu Vegas roadtrip.

9. Honeymoon in Vegas

After losing his fiance in a high stakes game of poker to a ruthless millionaire, Jack Singer will do anything to find her and get back.  Including strapping on a parachute and jumping out of a perfectly good airplane with the Flying Elvises.

8. Oceans 11

oceans2
The film that made the names Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. synonymous with old school Las Vegas.  The Rat Pack would famously party and perform at the Sands every night while the movie was in production.  It hasn’t aged that well, but it’s still a fun look back at early Vegas.

7. Rain Man

Rainman+Blackjack
Selfish yuppie Charlie Babbitt takes the brother he never knew he had on a cross-country trip to Vegas, where he discovers his autistic brothers hidden talent for counting cards.

6. Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas

An assignment to cover the Mint 400 desert off-road race for Sports Illustrated turns into drug fueled quest for the heart of the American Dream in 1970’s Las Vegas.   Buy the ticket, and take the ride on this manic, psychedelic journey.

10 best Las Vegas pools

Las Vegas is fricking hot.  And i’m not just talking about the casinos and club scene here.  It’s a city in the middle of the Mojave Desert where the temperature can easily reach 100+ degrees every single day for months and months on end.  At some point between the eating, the drinking, and the dice throwing, you’re going to want to find some time to cool down and relax.  Preferably poolside with your beverage of choice.  All of the hotels have a pool, but here’s the best that offer a lot more than just a place to soak your head.

#10.  Tropicana

Tropicana Las Vegas

One of the first of the older hotels to really pour a lot of money and attention into their pool, and for years it was considered one of the best pools in Vegas.  The pool area at the Trop has with five pools and two hot tubs spread across 4 acres, a 16-foot waterfall and swim-up blackjack tables. It’s been around for years, but they’ve kept it current with updates and renovations.

#9.  MGM Grand

MGM Grand

MGM Grand is absolutely huge, and so of course the pool complex is too.   A sprawling seven acres with five swimming pools, a shallow lounging area with low-lying chairs, and three whirlpools. The pool area also has a 1,000-foot-long lazy river, where you can hop on an inner tube and drift on the current under the hot desert sun.

#8.  The Golden Nugget

Pool, Golden Nugget, Las Vegas

The Golden Nugget has been called a Strip style resort that just happens to be downtown.  Guests are often surprised to find that the pool at the Golden Nugget has a 200,000-gallon saltwater tank housing sharks and other game fish.   There’s even a waterslide that slips you straight through that tank in a transparent tunnel. The pool area is layered, and the third floor features The Hideout, with a two-story infinity pool.

#7.  The Venetian

Pool - Venetian Hotel, Las Vegas
The pool at the Venetian has a little something for everybody.  You can swim laps in a standard rectangular pool, chill out in a shallow lounging pool, or disappear to a small, secluded pool hidden away near Venezia Tower. For the partiers and day-drinkers there is a seasonal outdoor club, Tao Beach, which has its own pool and is open to guests 21 and over.

#6.  Bellagio

Bellagio Pool
Like everything else at Bellagio here you’ll find an upscale pool experience, and six pools flanked by pine and lemon trees. The scene here is a lot more laid back and refined than most other Vegas pools without the party and dayclub scene.  A great atmosphere for sipping on a Bellagio Mojito, made with fresh blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and mint, while taking in the faux-Italian architecture and landscaping.

20 songs to get you hyped for your Vegas trip

Introduction goes here.

“Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” – Brandon Flowers

This power ballad from the Killer’s frontman is a little more dramatic and

You are my Las Vegas” – Red Wanting Blue

This song is underheard, super catchy, and really fun to listen to.  Give this one a spin, and you’ll be humming it while booking your next trip. “‘Cause Baby, You’re my Las Vegas
The Queen of hearts and the King of all fools, Ain’t enough lights in this town to outshine me and you”

“Viva Las Vegas” – Elvis Presley

Of course no list of Vegas songs would be complete without this one.  Not an Elvis guy?  Viva Las Vegas has also been covered about a zillion times by other artists.   The punk version by Dead Kennedy’s is a good one, but it’s also been covered by ZZ Top, Vince Neil, Dread Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, and often played live by The Killers.

“Vegas” – Sara Bareilles

“40 Miles to Vegas” – Southern Culture on the Skids

Some Southern Rockabilly ideal for the building anticipation of those last few miles on a road trip to Vegas.  “40 miles to Vegas and we all started prayin!”

“Waking up in Vegas” – Katy Perry

Before she became a bubblegum pop icon, Katy Perry flirted with what sounded suspiciously a lot like rock.  “Why are these lights so bright?  Oh, did we get hitched last night, dressed up like Elvis,  Why, am I wearing your class ring?”

“Sin City” – AC/DC

Picture this opening scene.  You’ve landed at McCarren airport, you’ve gathered your bags, and you step outside ready to ride to your hotel on the strip.  Cue the opening chords of this AC/DC classic as the background song as you make it into town for that first night. “I’m gonna win!  In Sin City.”

“Luck be a Lady” – Frank Sinatra

About as much of a Vegas standard as Viva Las Vegas is.  Sinatra was one of those guys who put Vegas on the global entertainment map in the 60’s, and this song continues to play every night at the Fountains of Bellagio.

“That Was a Crazy Game of Poker” – O.A.R.

Some live versions of this genre-bending song go on longer than the World Series of Poker does.   A song you’ll be singing to yourself after a bad beat at a table full of colorful characters at 3am on Tuesday.  “That was a crazy game of poker, I lost it all, but someday I’ll be back again, And I, never to fold.”

“Vegas Lights” – Panic! At the Disco

“Oh, my, my, my, I’m the lone crap shooter, Playin’ the field ev’ry night. But baby, I can’t stay,You got to roll me and call me the tumblin’ dice”

“Casino Queen” – Wilco

Forget about the fact that this song was technically written about a riverboat casino on the Mississippi River, reframe it for Vegas, and it works perfectly.  “The room fills with smoke
and I’m already broke, and the dealer keeps on jokin’, as he takes my last token”

“Goin’ to Las Vegas” – Jimmy Ray

“Ooh Las Vegas” – Gram Parsons

“I been gambling here abouts for ten good solid years. If I told you all that went down it would burn off both your ears.”  Is there a more fitting lyric for a wild Vegas weekend than that one?

“Christmas in Las Vegas” – Richard Cheese

Visit in December and you can pretend that the lights on the strip are Christmas lights.  Or you can pretend the lights on your house in December are the lights of the strip. “The strip lights are all twinkling, there’s no room at the inn, but because ’tis the season, they’ll comp a suite for Mary at the Wynn!”
